Atlas Oyster Bar vs The Fish House

Let's just start by saying that I was just about to write off The Fish House (www.goodgrits.com) when I (a) realized that their sister restaurant Atlas Oyster Bar was awesome and (b) they have a pretty decent Sunday brunch. Since I like pretty much any and all brunch, that kind of pulled me back in for another visit. Plus, they have the "good" mints.

Why so hard on the poor Fish House you ask? I just think that it's overrated and over-talked about when you arrive in Pensacola. It's NOT the best restaurant around here, but "we have to go to the fish house!", "I love The Fish House!" ... oh, please... I think a lot of their dishes are pretty generic and yes, they have the famous "shrimp and gouda grits", but I personally think that Madison's Diner has a much better version.

ALL that said, they do have the best ever key lime pie (if you like it like I do). Nice, thick graham cracker and sugar crust, heavy key lime filling, and a creamy, fat topping of meringue. It's made "in house" and you can tell.

However, you can go to Atlas Oyster Bar, get a much more unique menu and still enjoy their sister restaurant's key lime pie (yumm again!). You also get the same great atmosphere and a few of the same signature dishes.

By now, you are probably wondering what I then must like about Atlas. I really like their oyster sampler, but if you like 'em raw, of course they are there for your taking - and they are good and fresh you can be sure. I'm also a big fan of their weekly specials - each time I go they always sound amazing and stick with what the server suggests. It hasn't failed me thus far. If you're in the mood for some sushi, they've got that also. They have a good selection of sushi, though don't forget about Dharma Blue (www.dharmablue.com)!

Now that you're done, do you remember what you are supposed to get for desert?

Great review! Isn't Atlas more expensive? We've only been to the Fish House a few times, but I LOVE their spinach salad! Thanks for the Pensacola reviews!

The atlas isn't more expensive. They have 1/2 price sushi night every Tuesday and .25 cent oysters every Sunday and Monday night. They have similar menus, Atlas just has more of a variety than the Fish House. On Wednesday nights locals know that they can beat the girls' night deck crowds by getting their $2.00 drinks in the Atlas bar with Matt & Nate- Pensacola's dynamic bartending duo! All the menus are online: www.goodgrits.com

I believe that the Atlas menu is more unique and interesting.

Atlas oyster house is(exuse the pun)a real pearl. Most people find it because there is a wait at Fish House but they coming back for the casual atmosphere and the great food. Do yourself a favor, next time your at the Fish House stop by the Atlas.

Atlas restaurant is like walking into a small coastal town bar. The decorations are unique and the food is exceptional. I particularly like the MoMA salad with a dozen of the freshest oysters. But I highly recommend that you try the nightly special. The local chefs come up with some of the most interesting recipes that I am sure you will absolutely love. I’m hungry!

The Fish House is great, and the Atlas is just as awesome! They have the best bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp ever and the weekly specials are always wonderful! Plus, you can't beat the oyster and sushi specials - and of course, ladies night! Try 'em both!!!!

I agree, I have always enjoyed dining at Atlas! Although I still love the Fish House I do not think that people give Atlas a chance! There is a lot more variety on the Atlas menu and the weekly specials are amazing (but gotta say my all time favorite is the Southern Seafood Relleno) If you have never given Atlas a chance I def recommend stopping by!
